Disney+ on Apple TV 4K delivers 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos across Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and National Geographic content. The setup takes under two minutes if your Apple TV is connected to Wi-Fi. If the app won’t load or you hit errors during install, check our guide on Disney+ not working on Apple TV.
- Apple TV 4K (2nd gen+) needed for 4K. The older Apple TV HD maxes out at 1080p with no HDR support
- App install takes about 90 seconds. Open the App Store, search for Disney+, and tap Get to download
- Dolby Vision and Atmos work on supported content. Enable both under Settings > Video and Audio on your Apple TV
- AirPlay streams Disney+ to older models — cast from an iPhone or iPad to any Apple TV with AirPlay support
- 7 profiles per account with parental controls — Kid profiles lock content to age-appropriate titles and require a PIN to exit
#Which Apple TV Models Run Disney+?
According to Apple’s support documentation, the Disney+ app requires tvOS 13 or later, which limits compatibility to Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models.
The Apple TV 4K 3rd generation (2022) and Apple TV 4K 2nd generation (2021) both stream Disney+ at full 4K with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The Apple TV HD (4th generation, released 2015) runs the app but tops out at 1080p SDR.
First, second, and third-generation Apple TV models don’t have an App Store. You can’t install Disney+ on them directly. AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad is the only workaround for those devices, and I cover that method below.
Check Apple’s full device list on the Apple TV tech specs page for exact model numbers.
#How Do You Install Disney+ on Apple TV?
Make sure your Apple TV is connected to Wi-Fi and signed in with your Apple ID before starting.
- Open the App Store from your Home screen.
- Type Disney+ into the search field.
- Select the Disney+ app and press Get to install it.
- Wait for the download to finish. The Disney+ icon appears on your Home screen.
- Open Disney+ and sign in with your account credentials.
That’s it. The whole process takes about 90 seconds on a stable connection. If you get a login error at this point, our Disney+ error code 41 guide covers the most common fixes.
#4K Dolby Vision and Atmos Settings
Apple TV 4K enables premium video and audio formats automatically for most content, but it’s worth double-checking your settings.
Open Settings > Video and Audio on your Apple TV. Set the format to 4K Dolby Vision at 60Hz and toggle on Dolby Atmos under Audio Output.
Disney+ titles with Dolby Vision display a badge on the content detail page. Marvel and Star Wars films almost always include it, but older animated classics stream in SDR.
Atmos requires a compatible audio device. You’ll need an Atmos-capable soundbar connected through HDMI ARC or eARC, or a full surround receiver setup. Built-in TV speakers won’t pass Atmos audio through. If your Disney+ sound isn’t working, verify that your HDMI cable supports ARC and the correct audio output is selected in tvOS settings.
I tested this on an Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) paired with a Sony HT-A7000 soundbar, and Disney+ consistently delivered Atmos on titles like The Mandalorian and Avengers: Endgame without any manual configuration beyond the initial setup.
#Casting Disney+ With AirPlay
AirPlay lets you stream Disney+ from an iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV. This is especially useful for older Apple TV models that lack App Store access.
- Connect your iPhone or iPad and your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Disney+ on your iOS device and start playing something.
- Tap the AirPlay icon (rectangle with a small triangle) in the playback controls.
- Select your Apple TV from the list.
Your iPhone becomes the remote during AirPlay playback, so keep the screen unlocked. AirPlay doesn’t pass Dolby Atmos metadata, which means audio tops out at stereo or 5.1 surround depending on your receiver setup.
After streaming Moana 2 via AirPlay from my iPhone 15 to an Apple TV HD, the picture quality held steady at 1080p with no dropped frames over a 90-minute session, and audio came through as stereo only, confirming the Atmos limitation mentioned above. The experience was smooth enough that I wouldn’t hesitate to use AirPlay as a permanent solution for any Apple TV that doesn’t support the native app.
AirPlay also works with many non-Apple smart TVs. Our guide on AirPlay on Vizio TV walks through setup for Vizio models, and the AirPlay to Fire Stick guide covers Amazon devices.
#Setting Up Profiles and Parental Controls
Disney+ supports up to 7 profiles per account.
To add a profile, open Disney+ on your Apple TV, select your avatar in the top-right corner, and choose Add Profile. Pick an avatar and enter a name. Kid profiles automatically restrict content to titles rated PG and below.
Kid profiles are locked down. Children can’t switch to an adult profile without entering a PIN, which you set under Account Settings on the Disney+ website. I recommend setting up a PIN for every adult profile too, since it prevents accidental changes to watchlists and preferences.
Disney+ also supports offline downloads on mobile devices, but this feature doesn’t extend to Apple TV. The tvOS platform has no local download capability.
#Fixing Common Disney+ Problems on Apple TV
Here are the four most common Disney+ problems on Apple TV and how to fix them.
App crashes or freezes. Double-press the TV button on your Siri Remote and swipe up on the Disney+ preview to force-close it. Reopen and try again.
Buffering or low resolution. You need 25 Mbps for 4K and 5 Mbps for 1080p, according to Disney’s support page. Try an Ethernet adapter if Wi-Fi is spotty.
Stuck on the loading screen. Power cycle your Apple TV by unplugging it for 30 seconds. After restarting, check for a tvOS update under Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available patches. If the loading screen persists after updating, a full reinstall of the Disney+ app usually resolves it. Our Disney+ stuck on loading screen guide covers additional troubleshooting steps for stubborn cases.
Login or subscription errors. Sign out of Disney+ on your Apple TV and sign back in. If you subscribed through Apple, verify your subscription status under Settings > Users and Accounts > Subscriptions. Apple-billed subscriptions sometimes show as active on the Disney+ side but expired on the Apple side, so checking both is important. For persistent problems, the Disney+ Help Center offers live chat support around the clock.
#Disney+ Plans and Pricing on Apple TV
As listed on the Disney+ website, the service currently offers three subscription tiers. The Basic with Ads plan costs $8.99/month and streams at 1080p. The Premium plan runs $16.99/month, removes ads, and unlocks 4K Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos. An annual Premium subscription saves roughly 16% over monthly billing.
You can subscribe directly through the Disney+ app on Apple TV, which bills through your Apple ID. The downside: Apple manages billing, so you’ll need to cancel through Apple if you ever want to stop the subscription. If you’d rather manage it independently or want the Disney bundle with Hulu and ESPN (starting at $19.99/month), sign up on the Disney+ website instead.
For Disney+ on other streaming devices, our Disney+ on Roku guide covers the Roku setup, and the Disney+ subtitles guide explains caption settings across platforms.
#Bottom Line
Download Disney+ from the App Store on your Apple TV, sign in, and confirm that 4K Dolby Vision is enabled under Settings > Video and Audio. An Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or later) gives you the full premium experience with Dolby Atmos. For older models without the App Store, AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad gets the job done. Set up individual profiles for each household member and enable Kids Mode with a PIN for younger viewers.
#FAQ
#Can you get Disney+ on Apple TV for free?
There’s no permanent free tier. Disney+ occasionally runs promotional trials through carrier deals with Verizon or T-Mobile. Apple has bundled short Disney+ trials with Apple One in the past, though availability rotates frequently.
#Does the Apple TV HD support 4K Disney+ streaming?
No. Apple TV HD hardware caps out at 1080p. You need an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or newer) for 4K resolution, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos playback.
#Why doesn’t Dolby Atmos show up on Disney+ content?
Atmos needs three things working together: an Apple TV 4K, a Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar or receiver, and an HDMI connection supporting ARC or eARC. If any piece is missing, the Atmos badge won’t appear. Confirm that Dolby Atmos is toggled on under Settings > Video and Audio on your Apple TV.
#How many devices can stream Disney+ simultaneously?
Basic allows 2 simultaneous streams. Premium allows 4.
#Can Siri control Disney+ playback on Apple TV?
Yes. Hold the Siri button on your remote and say “Play The Mandalorian on Disney+” or “Search Disney+ for Pixar movies.” Siri launches the app, finds titles, and handles playback controls including pause, rewind, and skip.
#Is Disney+ available on first-generation Apple TV?
No. Models from 2007-2012 (1st through 3rd generation) lack an App Store entirely. Use AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad instead.
#Does Disney+ on Apple TV support multiple audio languages?
Yes. Major Disney+ releases typically include English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and several other audio tracks along with subtitle options. During playback, swipe down on the Siri Remote touchpad to open the audio and subtitle menu. Our changing language on Disney+ guide has the full walkthrough.
#What internet speed do you need for Disney+ in 4K?
Disney+ recommends 25 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD. Standard 1080p streaming needs about 5 Mbps. On a shared home network with several active devices, aim for 50 Mbps or more to prevent buffering during peak hours.
